Road safety and traffic enforcement measures

Municipalities and law enforcement agencies in Brazil and Portugal are implementing various technological and operational measures to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations.

In Brazil, Petrolina mandated the installation of free GPS tracking devices on all licensed taxis to improve oversight. Porto Alegre has expanded its electronic enforcement capabilities through signal-advance detectors and the ‘Operação Radar’ program. During the week of August 10 to 16, the city’s Empresa Pública de Transporte e Circulação (EPTC) conducted approximately 70 mobile radar operations, inspecting over 22,000 vehicles. This period saw three drivers cited in the North Zone for exceeding speed limits by more than 50%, an infraction classified as a very serious offense that may lead to fines, license points, and driving suspensions.

In Portugal, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) continues its ‘Quem o avisa...’ prevention program. For August, the PSP published a mobile radar schedule targeting high-traffic areas to reduce accidents during the summer holiday season. These operations are distributed across several districts, including Lisboa, Porto, Setúbal, Coimbra, Santarém, and Évora.
