Brazilian citizens seek embassy assistance after Polish lawmaker's social media post
Two Brazilian women in Warsaw, Poland, have sought assistance from the Brazilian Embassy following a social media post by Polish Member of the European Parliament Dominik Tarczyński. The post featured a photograph of the women making an 'L' hand gesture—a symbol of support for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva—and included a pin from the Workers' Party (PT). Tarczyński requested urgent information regarding the women's identities and advocated for their deportation, citing Polish laws against the promotion of communism.
In the wake of the social media backlash, the multinational company Procter & Gamble (P&G) confirmed the dismissal of one of the Brazilian employees involved. The incident has sparked a broader debate regarding freedom of expression, political manifestation, and the professional consequences of public political stances.
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Embassy in Warsaw has been notified and is available to provide consular assistance to the citizens if requested. While Polish law restricts the promotion of totalitarian regimes, authorities have not publicly confirmed the opening of any formal legal proceedings regarding the incident.
