Brazilian Community Book Clubs Expand Access to Literature

The Biblioteca A Casa Amarela launched a community book club in June 2024 in the Anchieta neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro's North Zone. The initiative, originally aimed at children, now includes teenagers and adults and meets online every two weeks, with a face‑to‑face gathering every two months at the library’s Cinelândia metro station location. Participation is free and members choose monthly themes and books collectively, turning reading into a social dialogue.

The Clube de Leitura CCBB, created in 2021 under the curatorship of writer and professor Suzana Vargas, marked its fifth anniversary in August 2026. Based at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio, the club hosts monthly public debates with writers, critics and artists, drawing about 80 participants per session and reaching roughly 4,000 attendees in total. In October 2026 the program will expand to Brasília, continuing its mission to democratize literary access across Brazil.
