Brazil community book club and literary program expansion

Overview

Throughout August 2026, Brazil saw a continued expansion of community-driven literary initiatives and public reading programs.

In Rio de Janeiro, the Biblioteca A Casa Amarela’s book club, which launched in June 2024, has expanded from children to include teenagers and adults. The group holds bi-weekly online sessions and face-to-face meetings every two months at the library’s Cinelândia metro station location. Meanwhile, the Clube de Leitura CCBB, curated by Suzana Vargas, celebrated its fifth anniversary in August 2026. The club, which has reached approximately 4,000 attendees, plans to expand to Brasília in October 2026.

Regional activities also highlighted local culture. In Patrocínio, the municipal library’s “Café com Letras” session on 5 August focused on local authors. In Guarulhos, the Mega Feirão de Livros André Luiz took place on 15–16 August at Bosque Maia, offering low-cost books and featuring a book signing by Valter Farid Julio and performances by the Sorrindorfina clown group.

In the state of São Paulo, municipal libraries in Guarulhos scheduled free Reading Club meetings for 28 and 29 August to discuss the work ‘Tarde’ by Olavo Bilac. Additionally, the 18th edition of the ‘Viagem Literária’ program entered its final week, providing free storytelling sessions across 66 cities. Organized by the State Secretariat of Culture, Economy, and Creative Industries, these performances focus on folk tales and Afro-Brazilian traditions to engage children and families.
