Brazilian court orders betting platform to pay R$335,000 to gambler

Judge Letícia Drumond of the 2nd Civil Court in Itajubá, Minas Gerais, annulled an extrajudicial settlement between an online betting company and a consumer and ordered the company to pay the full prize of R$335,000. The court found the previous agreement, in which the platform offered R$15,000, to be abusive under Brazil's Consumer Defense Code, noting that the bettor had been allowed to withdraw only R$5,000 and then R$37.73 despite confirming the win.

The betting house argued a system failure and alleged the winnings were irregular, but the judge required the company to prove any technical fault through impartial expertise, which it did not provide. The ruling emphasizes the consumer relationship in betting contracts and reinforces the duty of gambling platforms to monitor and prevent fraud.
