Brazilian courts consider ousting Maranhão deputies and convicting Eduardo Bolsonaro
The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is set to resume a case on Friday that could annul the 2022 election results for the PSC ticket in Maranhão and lead to the removal of state deputies Fernando Braide and Wellington do Curso. The case, delayed for months, involves accusations of gender‑quota fraud and has been re‑activated after Minister Estela Aranha was called by the National Justice Council and a security writ was filed at the TSE.
On the same day, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) will hear arguments on whether former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro should be convicted of the crime of coercion in the course of a process investigating a scheme to pressure the United States to impose tariffs on Brazilian exports. The trial, led by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, examines claims that Bolsonaro’s actions caused concrete economic losses and seeks possible imprisonment and reparations.
