Brazilian courts suspend removal processes for local officials
Judicial authorities in Brazil have issued injunctions to suspend the removal of two local officials pending further legal review.
In São Paulo, a judge suspended the impeachment process against São Caetano city councilman Getúlio de Carvalho Filho, known as Getulinho. The proceedings, which alleged breaches of parliamentary decorum including the violation of patient rights in intensive care units and biosafety protocol breaches, have been halted. The court cited the need to verify the legal legitimacy of the accusers before proceeding.
In Paraíba, a minister of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) suspended the removal of Areia Mayor Silvia Cesar Farias da Cunha Lima and Vice-Mayor Luiz Francisco dos Santos Neto. The officials were previously stripped of their mandates by a regional court following allegations of illegal vote-buying and abuse of political power during the 2024 elections. The TSE minister noted that immediate removal could trigger irreversible institutional consequences, such as the need for supplementary elections, before the merits of the appeal are fully examined.
