Brazilian courts uphold lengthy murder sentences in São Paulo and Cuiabá

The Superior Court of Justice denied a habeas corpus request and maintained an 83‑year, 13‑day prison term for César Francisco Moranza Júnior, who killed a mother and her son in Sumaré, São Paulo, after demanding repayment of a debt. The court affirmed convictions for qualified homicide, attempted homicide, theft and concealment of a corpse.

In Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, a jury tribunal sentenced Carolyne Beatriz da Silva and Roneclei José Mendes to 14 years each for the qualified homicide of Wesley Pinho Nardes. Prosecutors said the couple planned an ambush on the BR‑364 highway in November 2020, motivated by revenge, and the court ordered the sentences to begin in a closed‑regime facility.
