Brazil harsh prison sentences continue

Since early July 2026 Brazil’s courts have repeatedly issued lengthy terms for violent and corruption offences. The Superior Court of Justice upheld an 83‑year sentence for a murder‑for‑debt case in São Paulo and a 14‑year term for a highway ambush homicide in Cuiabá. Throughout July judges imposed a 91‑year term for a rape‑linked familicide in Rio Grande do Sul, a 35‑year femicide sentence in Bento Gonçalves, and a 41‑year term for the torture and murder of an infant step‑child in the same state. A former prison guard received 21 years for killing a guard in Cuiabá, while a police officer lost his gun licence after killing his stepson. Other notable rulings include an 18‑year‑9‑month term for a step‑mother murder in Jataí, a 42‑year sentence for a drunk‑driving crash in Espírito Santo, and multiple femicide and child‑torture penalties across several states.

New rulings in late July extend the pattern. In the border city of Brasileia, Acre, a jury sentenced two men to a combined 38 years for a 2024 homicide tied to a turf war between organized‑crime groups. In Goiás, a court handed more than 57 years to seven members of a syndicate that stole, re‑registered and resold rental cars from São Paulo and the Federal District, also ordering moral‑damage compensation and loss of political rights. In Bahia, former councilor Lucas de Souza Lemos received over 18 years for drug‑trafficking, association and financing criminal activity, to be served under house arrest while he appeals. These decisions reinforce a nationwide judicial trend of imposing severe penalties for both violent crimes and organized‑crime enterprises.
