Brazil extends driver's licence validity as Paraná suspends renewal exams

The National Traffic Council (Contran) issued Deliberation No. 278, extending the validity of the Carteira Nacional de Habilitação (CNH) and the Autorizaç ão para Conduzir Ciclomotor (ACC) that would originally expire between 5 June and 8 September 2026. Holders of these documents may continue to use them until 9 September 2026 without needing a new licence or additional registration. The extension is nationwide, does not apply to drivers whose licence is suspended or cancelled, and does not automatically prolong any related medical, psychological or other renewal requirements.

In the state of Paraná, the Department of Transit (Detran‑PR) has temporarily halted scheduling of the mandatory medical and psychological exams required for obtaining or renewing a CNH. The suspension began on 13 July 2026 while the agency implements a new fee structure that aligns with the federal ceiling of R$ 180 for the combined cost of the exams, a rule set by the Secretariat of National Transit (Senatran). The pause will remain until a new scheduling system is in place; a specific resumption date has not been announced. The Contran extension ensures that licences falling within the specified date window remain valid through 9 September 2026 despite the exam suspension.
