Brazilian experts urge weekly bed linen swaps and closed toilet lids to curb home germ spread
Health specialists in Brazil advise that bedding should be completely changed every seven days. The weekly replacement interrupts the life cycle of dust mites, bacteria and fungi that accumulate on sheets, pillowcases and blankets, reducing the risk of respiratory conditions such as allergic rhinitis and asthma, as well as skin irritations.
They also recommend closing the toilet lid before flushing. Flushing with the lid open creates a plume of aerosolized particles that can travel across the bathroom and settle on surfaces, personal items and other household objects, potentially spreading microorganisms and increasing infection risk. Both measures aim to improve indoor hygiene and protect residents' health.
