STF faces institutional crisis amid Banco Master investigation

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) is facing an institutional crisis as the Banco Master scandal impacts political discourse. STF President Edson Fachin has scheduled a meeting with the Federal Police for October 13 to review a list of ministers allegedly mentioned in communications with former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

In the context of the 2026 elections, the judiciary has become a central topic for presidential and senatorial candidates. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has advocated for stricter biographical scrutiny and potential changes to the appointment process, including the creation of a selection council with civil society participation.

Simultaneously, the Federal Police are conducting 'Operation Compliance Zero' to investigate suspected fraud at Banco Master. This includes scheduled testimonies from Central Bank President Gabriel Galípolo, former president Roberto Campos Neto, and BTG Pactual's André Esteves.

To address internal conflicts, Minister Fachin also implemented Resolution 921, which establishes new rules for the distribution of processes to prevent the automatic assignment of cases to specific ministers based on claims of connection.
