Brazilian federal universities expand course offerings in Bahia and Acre

The Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) received approval for 11 of 20 new undergraduate programs under the Ministry of Education's Universidades Transformadoras initiative. The approved courses include a Bachelor of Law in Jequié with 50 night‑time seats, as well as programs in Pedagogy, Computing and Artificial Intelligence, and Physiotherapy slated for 2026, creating 320 new student slots and 96 new professor positions. Implementation will be phased, with additional courses such as Psychology, Nursing, Speech Therapy, Health Services Management and Artificial Intelligence planned for later years.

Meanwhile, the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) inaugurated three new degree programs in the state’s interior: Information Systems in Xapuri, Biological Sciences in Brasiléia, and Nutrition in Sena Madureira. The launch expands UFAC’s presence to 16 of Acre’s 22 municipalities, advancing its interiorization policy aimed at decentralizing higher‑education access, fostering local professional development, and supporting regional economies. The university also recently secured R$90 million for infrastructure, including the construction of Acre’s first university hospital.
