Brazil higher education expansion 2026‑27

In late July 2026, the municipality of Lauro de Freitas in Bahia partnered with UNEB to launch a selective process for 19 seats, reviving a dormant university pole and aiming to increase local access to public higher‑education places.

A week later a nationwide drive was reported, with dozens of municipalities, federal institutes and state universities announcing thousands of new admission slots for the 2026‑2027 academic year, including large enrollment rounds at Unicamp, UNEMAT, IFPA, IFMT and Unicentro.

On 2 August 2026 the rollout accelerated further. Dozens of public universities, federal institutes and municipal education departments opened admission processes for the 2027 academic year, collectively offering more than 30,000 university seats and public‑school teaching positions. Unicamp added 3,358 regular seats and introduced two new courses—International Relations and Artificial Intelligence & Data Science—while expanding test sites to Vinhedo and Paulínia. The São Paulo university entrance board (Fuvest) released 8,147 slots for the USP vestibular, along with a career guide and fee‑waiver eligibility for over 15,000 candidates.

The same day, Unicamp confirmed an “overbooking” system to manage enrolments, and UNEMAT opened 2,350 places. IFPA released 465 undergraduate vacancies, IFMT launched its largest ever selection with 3,815 free technical‑integrated slots across 23 campuses, and IFMG offered 4,985 technical and undergraduate places. Municipal selections expanded, adding 8 bilingual teacher posts in Canhotinho, Pernambuco, alongside earlier Caldas Novas positions. The coordinated expansion continues to provide tens of thousands of new opportunities for students and educators across Brazil.
