Brazilian federal universities expand degree offerings

Brazilian federal universities are expanding their academic offerings through the Ministry of Education’s ‘Universidades Transformadoras’ program.

The Federal University of Acre (Ufac) plans to formalize a request to create a Psychology course at the Campus Floresta in Cruzeiro do Sul. Following meetings in Brasília with the Secretary of Higher Education, the university aims to submit the proposal next year to address regional social demands and strengthen higher education in the interior of Acre.

Similarly, the Federal University of the Southern Border (UFFS) will introduce three new courses at its Realeza Campus: Psychology, Law, and Biotechnology. These programs, which are expected to provide 130 new spots, are currently slated for 2028, though the university is working to move the start date to 2027. The new courses were developed following public hearings to address regional needs, such as the lack of public psychology programs in Southwest Paraná and the demand for biotechnology in family farming.
