Brazilian Firefighter Colonel Lauro César Botto Maia Accused of Threatening Witnesses in Sexual Harassment Probe

The 1st Prosecutor's Office of Military Justice filed a complaint on 4 June against Colonel Lauro César Botto Maia of Brazil's Corpo de Bombeiros, alleging he threatened four sergeants who are witnesses in an internal sexual‑harassment investigation. The Public Ministry (MP) requested that the colonel be placed in preventive detention. On 5 June the Military Justice judge received the request and denied it, citing minimal evidentiary support while noting sufficient material to commence criminal proceedings.

The investigation stems from a sexual‑harassment complaint filed in July by the Rio de Janeiro State Public Ministry’s specialized security group (Gaesp). Prosecutors say the colonel sent inappropriate WhatsApp messages between late 2024 and July 2025, using a third‑party number and the alias “Marcos João,” to a subordinate in an attempt to obtain sexual favor. As interim measures, the colonel has had his firearm license suspended and is prohibited from contacting the alleged victims. The case will proceed to trial for further determination of guilt.
