Overview

In early August 2026 Brazilian authorities continued to confront sexual‑harassment allegations within security institutions. On 4 August, retired lieutenant‑colonel Welton José da Silva Baião, former commander of the Minas Gerais Military Police’s 1st Battalion, was arrested after allegedly assaulting a female passenger on an intercity bus. He was detained in Juiz de Fora pending a custody hearing.

Two days later, the 1st Prosecutor's Office of Military Justice filed a complaint against Colonel Lauro César Botto Maia of the Corpo de Bombeiros. The colonel is accused of threatening four sergeants who are witnesses in an internal sexual‑harassment investigation and of sending inappropriate messages to a subordinate. While a request for his preventive detention was denied, the case proceeds toward trial, with his firearm license suspended and contact with alleged victims prohibited.
