Brazilian firefighters tackle vegetation fires in Mato Grosso and conduct preventive burns in Pantanal

On June 2, the Military Firefighters Corps of Mato Grosso responded to two vegetation fires in the municipalities of Confresa and Primavera do Leste. The crews used direct suppression and a fire‑against‑fire technique, extinguishing both blazes without injuries and monitoring the sites afterward.

Separately, the Institute of Environment of Mato Grosso do Sul (Imasul) and the State Military Firefighters carried out integrated fire‑management (MIF) prescribed burns in the Pantanal State Park of Rio Negro. Two burning phases covered more than 1,600 hectares, reducing accumulated biomass and creating a preventive fire‑break belt. The operations were monitored from the ground and by aerial units, and involved collaboration with local landowners to establish fire lines and acequias.

Both actions aim to lower the risk of large wildfires during the dry season and protect the region’s ecosystems.
