GM and GWM pour billions into Brazil auto market, launch new electric SUV
General Motors announced an additional R$ 3.5 billion investment, raising its Brazil plan to R$ 10.5 billion through 2028. The funds will focus on modernising Chevrolet’s portfolio, adding hybrid technology and expanding production capacity in São Paulo, where GM operates several plants.
Great Wall Motors (GWM) unveiled the Ora 5, a compact electric SUV priced at R$ 159 000. The model delivers 204 hp, a battery offering 349 km (Inmetro) up to 435 km (WLTP) range, fast‑charging capability and a suite of advanced driver‑assist features. GWM also confirmed a second Brazilian factory in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, dedicated to producing electrified vehicles and supporting the Ora 5 platform.
Industry analysts project that Chinese automakers could command about 30 % of Brazil’s light‑vehicle sales by 2030, highlighting a broader shift toward electric and software‑centric mobility in the country.
