Brazil sports industry faces betting ban and pornographic sponsorship restrictions

A federal decree banning the operation and advertising of betting companies in Brazil has caused significant disruption in the Brasileirão football league. Because 14 of the 20 Série A clubs relied on gambling firms as primary shirt sponsors, the ban forced teams to rapidly rebrand their kits. Responses varied: Corinthians secured an emergency deal with the AI platform Jota.ai, Santos replaced its betting sponsor with a charity logo, and clubs like Flamengo and Fluminense displayed protest messages on their kits.

Separately, the Chamber of Deputies Sports Commission has approved a bill to prohibit pornographic content platforms from sponsoring sports activities. This proposed law would extend to advertising in stadiums, arenas, and electronic broadcasts. The bill, which includes a specific legal definition for pornographic content to ensure clarity, aims to protect children and adolescents from exposure to adult content during sporting events. The measure does not ban the platforms themselves but restricts their association with the sports environment.
