Brazilian gamer wins lawsuit, Microsoft ordered to restore Xbox account

A Brazilian court ruled in favor of Xbox player Ordo_Liberal, who had lost access to his account and entire digital game library after Microsoft blocked the account following a hack. The tribunal ordered Microsoft to reactivate the account and restore all purchased titles within 15 days, otherwise face daily fines that could rise to several hundred dollars. The judgment also mandated payment of about US$400 (roughly 2,000 reais) in moral damages.

The case arose when Microsoft support told the gamer he would have to repurchase every game. The player sued under Brazil’s consumer‑protection law, which allows free legal aid. Microsoft defended the case with a team of twelve lawyers and a 300‑page filing, but the court rejected the company’s stance that digital purchases are merely licences. The ruling is being cited as a precedent for digital‑goods ownership rights worldwide.
