Brazilian health experts warn of winter diet and blood‑pressure risks

Nutrition specialists in Brazil advise that colder months often lead to higher consumption of calorie‑dense, fatty and sugary foods, which can undermine health. They recommend prioritising soups and broths made with vegetables, lean proteins and legumes such as carrots, broccoli, lentils and beans, and substituting processed snacks with fruits, nuts, plain yogurt or homemade baked fruit. Adequate hydration with unsweetened teas, infused water or light broths is also emphasized.

Medical experts note that high blood pressure tends to worsen in winter due to vasoconstriction, reduced physical activity and increased intake of salty, high‑fat foods. Hospital admissions for hypertensive crises, heart attacks and strokes can rise up to 30% during this season. Preventive measures include staying warm, regularly monitoring blood pressure, maintaining a low‑salt diet, staying hydrated and consulting a physician before altering medication.
