Brazil's Indigenous Video Archive Faces Preservation Crisis
The "Vídeo nas Aldeias" project, created in 1986 by indigenous activist and filmmaker Vincent Carelli, has trained generations of indigenous cinematographers and compiled more than 70 documentary films documenting over 40 indigenous peoples. The collection holds over 4,000 hours of analog footage and a comparable amount of native‑digital recordings.
Carelli warned at the Bonito CineSur festival in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul that the archive is now endangered because public institutions lack the funding and technical capacity to preserve digital material, which is far more costly than storing film reels. He asked, “Para que museu isso iria? Qual instituição poderia fazer esse trabalho que a gente faz de atender e dar acesso a coisas específicas?”
University of Mato Grosso do Sul professor Daniela Siqueira echoed the concern, urging the Brazilian state to balance investment in production with resources for long‑term preservation, warning that without action the country could lose all the money spent on audiovisual production over the next two decades.
