Brazilian investors face shifting tax landscapes and home bias risks

Brazilian investors are navigating new financial challenges driven by tax policy changes and the risks of home bias. The implementation of the Minimum Individual Income Tax (IRPFM) and the taxation of dividends have altered traditional wealth management strategies. Historically, high-net-worth individuals favored tax-exempt instruments such as LCIs, LCAs, and incentivized debentures to minimize tax liabilities.

With new regulations, there is a growing trend of shifting from tax-exempt assets to taxable options like CDBs. This shift is motivated by the need to manage the new 10% withholding tax on monthly dividends exceeding R$ 50,000. Investors are now focused on strategic planning to ensure they meet minimum taxation requirements to potentially recover withheld amounts during annual declarations.

Additionally, experts highlight the risks of home bias, where investors disproportionately concentrate wealth within Brazil. While the local market offers sophisticated fixed-income products and high interest rates, Brazil represented only approximately 0.25% of the MSCI ACWI IMI global equity index as of June 2026. Diversifying into international markets is presented as a way to access a broader range of sectors, currencies, and economic opportunities.
