Brazilian Labor Court restricts companies from influencing employee votes
The Labor Court in Minas Gerais has issued rulings against companies for attempting to influence employees' political choices during elections. In one case involving the transport company Eucatur, the court ordered the cessation of all political-electoral activities within the company following investigations by the Labor Public Ministry (MPT).
Investigations revealed that a company partner conducted weekly lectures during working hours to induce specific votes, utilizing corporate WhatsApp groups to organize attendance. One of the candidates involved was also the company's commercial manager. The court prohibited the company from using its facilities, vehicles, or communication channels for political purposes and forbade any form of pressure or retaliation against employees with differing political views.
In a separate action, the court ordered a rental and transport company and two entrepreneurs to remove social media posts that promised employees time off if a specific candidate won the first round of elections. The court mandated that the defendants issue a communication to all staff via email, WhatsApp, and social media, guaranteeing their right to vote freely without fear of retaliation or loss of employment. Failure to comply with these orders carries a fine of R$ 30,000.
