Brazilian lawmakers push ban on betting advertising

Federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL‑SP) filed a request with the Federal Public Ministry asking courts to bar sports commentators from promoting betting odds during televised matches, saying the practice mixes expert analysis with commercial advertising and exposes viewers to gambling.

Deputy Kim Kataguiri (Mission‑SP) presented Bill 3.287/2026, which would prohibit all advertising, sponsorship and commercial promotion of fixed‑odds betting across Brazil. The proposal mandates prominent risk‑alert messages, bans betting branding in stadium naming rights and influencer campaigns, and threatens license revocation for repeat violations. Both lawmakers argue that the rapid growth of betting promotions fuels problem gambling, financial hardship and creates an uneven market that shifts profits to tax havens while social costs fall on taxpayers.
