Brazilian leaders issue letter supporting STF President Fachin

A group of over 200 Brazilian figures, including former ministers, economists, and business leaders, has issued a letter in support of Supreme Federal Court (STF) President Edson Fachin. The signatories expressed support for the measures taken by Fachin to address the current institutional crisis, which they described as one of the most serious in the history of the Court and the Brazilian Republic.

The letter calls for a rigorous and impartial investigation into recent accusations to preserve democracy and restore trust in institutions. Simultaneously, the group advocates for urgent institutional reforms within the STF to strengthen collegiality, ensure impartiality, prevent conflicts of interest, and increase transparency and social control over the Court.

The crisis follows revelations regarding communications between Minister Alexandre de Moraes and former banker Daniel Vorcaro, who is currently imprisoned on fraud charges. Fachin has assumed the role of rapporteur in the process examining these relations, replacing Minister André Mendonça. The STF is also reviewing investigations involving Banco Master and the National Social Security Institute (INSS).
