Brazil election integrity debate

In early July, public appeals urged Brazilian voters to examine the honesty of political candidates ahead of upcoming elections. By late July, analysts reported a deepening erosion of voter confidence, linking it to scandals, broken promises, and power struggles that have discouraged some citizens from voting.

At the same time, former president Jair Bolsonaro and his son Flávio Bolsonaro renewed unfounded claims that Brazil’s electronic voting machines are unreliable and tied to foreign firms. Electoral authorities reiterated that the machines are domestically produced, regularly audited and not connected to the Venezuelan company Smartmatic. The Supreme Electoral Court previously ruled Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years after his baseless 2022 accusations, a decision that the younger Bolsonaro appears to be echoing.

These developments illustrate a growing contest over the credibility of Brazil’s electoral system, with political figures challenging its integrity even as institutions defend the technology and the democratic process.
