Brazilian municipalities approve new literacy policies

Municipalities in Brazil are advancing legislative measures to establish formal literacy policies within their public school systems.

In Cambé, the Constitution and Justice Commission approved a bill to create a Municipal Literacy Policy. The proposal aims to ensure all children are literate by the end of the 2nd year of elementary school. The plan includes continuous training for educators, student progress monitoring, and the use of pedagogical indicators to guide teaching.

In Feira de Santana, the City Council unanimously approved two bills that establish a Municipal Literacy Policy and reorganize the municipal education system. The measures focus on reading, writing, and mathematical fluency, particularly for students in early schooling years. The policy also seeks to integrate local efforts with federal and state programs, such as the National Commitment to Literacy (CNCA), to access technical support and financial resources.
