Brazilian municipalities expand school environmental education and vector‑control campaigns

The municipality of Ribeirão Pires, through its Secretariat of Climate, Environment and Housing, organized a three‑day environmental‑education program titled “Mundo dos Insetos” at Escola Estadual Emílio Sortino. From June 8 to 10, 353 students from grades 1‑5 participated in activities that showcased insects such as the Australian stick insect and a Madagascar cockroach, aiming to raise awareness of biodiversity and sustainable practices as part of the city’s “Junho Verde” campaign.

In Belford Roxo, the municipal Health Secretariat conducted a weekly Vector and Zoonoses Action in the Gogó da Ema neighborhood on June 13. About 60 agents carried out 1,822 home visits, inspected properties for mosquito breeding sites, and used four fumigation trucks. The operation also vaccinated 358 dogs and 83 cats and included a theatrical character, “Mosquita,” to educate children about preventing dengue, Zika and chikungunya.
