Brazilian municipalities implement new animal protection policies

Municipalities in Brazil are implementing new public policies focused on animal protection and welfare.

In Paulo Afonso, the Superintendency for the Protection and Care of Stray Animals (SUPATAS) has launched the 'Castramóvel' mobile unit as part of the Avança Paulo Afonso Program. Starting in the PA IV neighborhood, the initiative provides spaying and neutering services to control animal populations, prevent diseases, and improve the quality of life for pets and stray animals. The program will expand to various neighborhoods in the coming months.

In Caxias, the municipality has established a permanent public policy for animal welfare, becoming the first in Maranhão to create a dedicated Secretariat for Animal Protection. Key developments include the creation of the Integrated Animal Welfare Center and a Municipal Corral for managing medium and large animals found on public roads. The administration has also implemented programs such as 'Gatas por Gatas,' adoption fairs, and increased inspections to combat animal cruelty.
