Brazilian municipalities implement new arbovirus prevention strategies
Municipal health committees in Brazil are implementing new strategies to combat arboviruses such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya. In Corumbá, authorities have introduced the Wolbachia method, a technology that utilizes Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the naturally occurring Wolbachia bacteria. This bacteria reduces the mosquito's ability to transmit viruses to humans. The method is considered self-sustaining as the bacteria is passed to offspring and does not involve genetic modification.
In Três Lagoas, the Arbovirus Mobilization and Combat Committee is focusing on community engagement by encouraging educational institutions and local organizations to lead prevention and awareness campaigns. These efforts include educational blitzes, the distribution of informative materials, and the recognition of participating institutions through certificates to foster a culture of prevention against the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
