Brazilian municipalities intensify flood prevention measures

Municipalities in Brazil are intensifying preventive measures to mitigate the impacts of heavy rainfall and extreme weather events.

In Orleans, the Civil Defense is conducting desilting, river cleaning, and drainage maintenance in critical areas. Efforts are focused on urban communities such as Rio Belo, Oratório, Taipa, and Corridas, as well as rural areas like Brusque and Barracão. Recent heavy rains caused soil movement and landslides, including the collapse of a retaining wall and the displacement of a residence in Jardim das Orquídeas, though no victims were reported. Officials noted that improper waste disposal and soil runoff from unvegetated land continue to obstruct drainage systems.

Similarly, Campina Grande do Sul is executing works to improve water runoff and reduce flooding risks. Actions include cleaning rivers and streams and removing accumulated sediment in areas such as Vila Bonfim, Rio Lagoão, and the Terra Boa neighborhood. In Terra Boa, interventions target the Rio Manoel José and Ribeirão da Terra, which are prone to rapid water level rises due to runoff from the Serra do Mar mountains. Specific work is also being done to widen a narrowed canal near the Capivari Reservoir to increase flow capacity.
