Brazilian municipalities launch climate adaptation and fire prevention initiatives
Brazilian municipalities are implementing various strategies to address climate change and environmental risks. In Bauru, the local government has launched the ‘Bauru em Alerta’ campaign to prevent fires. This initiative, supported by the Civil Defense and Military Environmental Police, aims to raise awareness about water conservation and fire prevention during prolonged droughts, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon which is expected to persist until early 2027.
In Nova Iguaçu, the municipality has begun developing a Local Climate Action Plan (PLAC) in partnership with UN-Habitat and the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability. The plan aims to identify vulnerabilities and establish prevention and adaptation measures for climate impacts, such as flooding. A participatory workshop involving public officials and civil society was held to contribute to the municipal climate diagnosis, with the final plan expected to be completed by 2027.
