Brazilian municipalities launch initiatives to combat violence against women

Municipalities in Brazil are implementing new strategies to strengthen protection networks for women facing violence.

In São José, an initiative led by the Movimento Mulher Viva focused on training condominium managers, janitors, and support staff. The goal is to empower these professionals to recognize signs of distress and follow legal protocols for reporting incidents. The program includes the distribution of practical guides and informative materials for elevators to increase awareness. Legal assistance is also being facilitated through the ‘OAB por Elas’ project, which provides free legal services at specialized police stations.

In Araras, São Paulo, the first meeting of an Intersectoral Commission to Combat Violence was held. This committee brings together representatives from social assistance, health, education, and law enforcement to define public policy guidelines and integrated response protocols. The initiative aims to streamline how different municipal services interact to ensure victims receive structured support in accordance with the Maria da Penha Law.
