Brazil starts 2026 multivaccination drive as measles cases rise
Brazil's Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide multivaccination campaign that runs from 3 August to 1 September 2026. The effort, coordinated by municipal health secretariats in cities such as Manaus, Vinhedo, Santos, Itaboraí, Ubatuba, Guarulhos, São Caetano do Sul and others, targets children and adolescents up to 14 years, 11 months and 29 days to update their vaccination records. A “Day D” of intensified outreach is scheduled for 22 August, with mobile teams and extended hours at health units.
In the state of São Paulo, health authorities have confirmed 15 measles cases in 2026, including the first case in Guarulhos since 2020. In response, the state health secretariat recommends that everyone aged 6 months to 59 years in São Paulo, Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo be vaccinated, even if previously immunised. The campaign aims for 95 % coverage of the triple‑viral (measles‑mumps‑rubella) vaccine; current coverage in São Paulo stands at about 77.5 % for the first dose and 65.5 % for the second dose.
The programme also introduces a second booster dose of the inactivated polio vaccine (VIP) and seeks to raise coverage for other vaccines, such as yellow fever (78.6 % in infants in Manaus), pentavalent (93.9 %) and polio (94.2 %).
