Brazilian municipalities launch public consultations on education policy and 2027 budget

The city council of Ponte Nova, Brazil, opened a public consultation that runs until 31 July for the Municipal Literacy Policy (Projeto de Lei 4.221/2026). Residents can submit comments online about measures aimed at achieving 100 % literacy for children by the end of the second grade and addressing learning gaps in grades three to five. The proposal also includes reforms to the Municipal Education Council to increase representation of Black communities, people with disabilities and the local federal institute.

Separately, the municipality of Cubatão announced a participatory budgeting consultation for the 2027 Annual Budget, available from 1 August to 31 August. Citizens aged 16 and older can vote through an online questionnaire to prioritize actions in areas such as health, education, infrastructure, mobility, social assistance, security, culture, sport and economic development. The process aims to broaden popular involvement and transparency in municipal spending decisions.
