Brazilian municipalities tighten fire bans and fines as dry season looms

The city of Itabira in Minas Gerais announced that anyone caught burning waste, leaves, or using fire to clear vacant lots will be fined R$465 (100 municipal fiscal units). The collective notification, published in the municipal official journal, is valid through 31 December and the penalty doubles for repeat offenses; non‑payment can trigger debt collection.

In the state of Mato Grosso, officials reported a 17 % decline in fire hotspots from January to 12 July compared with the same period last year, with a 21 % drop in the Cerrado biome. Despite an anticipated stronger El Niño that could bring historic drought, the government has instituted weekly monitoring meetings, reinforced civil‑defence patrols and fire‑prevention measures such as clearing public areas and opening firebreaks along roads. The authorities warned that vigilance must continue to protect public health, noting reduced smoke‑related respiratory cases in hospitals.
