Brazil Federal Police dismantles R$45 million Caixa fraud scheme

On 21 July, Brazil’s Federal Police carried out Operation Infiltrados, deploying about 120 agents to execute 25 search and seizure warrants in Rio de Janeiro municipalities (Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Niterói and Cabo Frio) and in the São Paulo towns of Indaiatuba and Salto. The operation targeted an alleged criminal organization that accessed confidential data to divert roughly R$45 million from customers of Caixa Econômica Federal.

Investigators say the ring involved public servants, lawyers and other facilitators who helped conceal the scheme and obstruct investigations. Caixa confirmed cooperation with the police and indicated it continuously monitors transactions for fraud. The suspects face charges including organized crime, obstruction of justice and violation of confidentiality.
