Brazilian religious leaders and local activists launch anti‑femicide campaigns

Religious leaders and public officials in Rio de Janeiro inaugurated the “Não ao Feminicídio – Mulher Luz da Humanidade” campaign, bringing together Catholic, evangelical, Afro‑Brazilian and other faith groups to create an inter‑religious support network for women at risk of violence. Cardinal Orani João Tempesta said defending women’s dignity "requires the union of public institutions, faith communities and civil society."

In the town of Rio de Contas, Bahia, the collective Rio de Mulheres Vivas, responding to two femicides in a month, is pressing municipal authorities for a dedicated shelter offering psychological care and legal assistance to victims. Collective member Daniele Virgínia Silva stressed the need for a concrete support centre to enable women to file complaints safely.
