Brazilian samba schools begin preparations for Carnival 2027
Preparations for the 2027 Carnival are underway across several major samba schools in Brazil.
In Rio de Janeiro, Grande Rio is evaluating candidates to succeed Virginia Fonseca as rainha de bateria, with Paolla Oliveira and Bianca Andrade among the names being considered. Meanwhile, Lexa has been officially crowned as the new rainha de bateria for Em Cima da Hora. Other schools are progressing through their musical selections: Imperatriz Leopoldinense has narrowed its samba-enredo competition to 10 finalists, and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel has moved six compositions to the quarterfinals. Beija-Flor is also advancing its competition, with two samba entries from Pará qualifying for the semifinals.
In São Paulo, Vai-Vai has completed its first round of samba-enredo eliminations, selecting three compositions to continue the race for the 2027 season. The school's theme will honor the cultural legacy of Bahia, specifically the works of Dorival Caymmi, Carybé, and Jorge Amado.
