Brazil 2027 Carnival preparations
Overview
Preparations for the 2027 Carnival season continue across Brazil as samba schools reveal themes, select muses, and conduct musical competitions. In Rio de Janeiro, the Special Group selection cycle is underway. Major institutions like Portela, Mangueira, and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel are presenting diverse cultural and political themes. Portela is in the final stages of selecting a samba to honor Monarco with the theme ‘Ao Mestre, com Carinho’, while Mangueira will focus on Afro-Brazilian culture with ‘Oyá por Nós’. A growing trend has emerged where schools opt to commission samba-enredos rather than holding traditional competitions; currently, 11 of the 29 sambas for the Sapucaí parade have been commissioned.
Notable personnel updates in Rio include singer Anitta being named the new drum queen for Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, succeeding Virginia Fonseca. In the school of Estácio de Sá, Karen Lopes has been named Queen for their centennial celebration. Additionally, the youth school Herdeiros da Vila will honor Sabrina Sato with the theme ‘Na Coroa da Herdeiros, Brilha Sabrina!’. In Unidos da Ponte, Débora Bana will lead 80 international dancers, while actress Carol Nakamura has departed Salgueiro to focus on her acting career.
In São Paulo, all Special Group schools have unveiled their samba-enredos. Camisa Verde e Branco is presenting ‘Ajuruetês – O Voo da Terra Brasil’, and Primeira da Cidade Líder will explore the career of Amazonian singer David Assayag. Vai-Vai is progressing through semifinal competitions for its theme ‘3 Obás de Xangô – A Mãe Bahia em Cantos, Cores e Memórias’. Império de Casa Verde has announced its theme, ‘Sob o céu do interior, brilha o sonho caipira: Jaguariúna, a capital country do Brasil’. Elite parades in São Paulo are scheduled for February 5 and 6, 2027.
