Rio de Janeiro samba schools prepare for Carnival 2027

Preparations for the 2027 Rio de Janeiro Carnival are underway as various samba schools reveal themes and hold competitions. Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel recently held the second stage of its samba selection at the Vila Vintém, where 15 works competed and six were eliminated. The school will present the theme “Latinamente Independente: Nosso Norte é o Sul em Remanifesto,” designed by Jack Vasconcelos.

In another development, Estação Primeira de Mangueira is preparing for its 2027 parade with the theme “Oyá por Nós.” Stylist Daniel Zarmanno is crafting artisanal costumes inspired by Orixás such as Iansã, Xangô, Ogum, Oxóssi, and Omolu, utilizing natural materials like gourds, seeds, and wood to represent these spiritual figures.

Additionally, Botafogo Samba Clube has announced a theme focused on the history of women's resistance against gender violence, tracing narratives from Greek patriarchy to modern Brazilian legal milestones like the Maria da Penha Law.
