Brazilian Senate candidates call for stricter Supreme Court oversight

Brazilian political candidates are calling for increased oversight and structural changes regarding the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Alexandre Curi, a Senate candidate for Paraná, argued that the next Senate must move beyond rhetoric to implement effective rules for the Court's operation. His proposals include creating external oversight mechanisms, establishing post-retirement quarantine rules for justices, increasing transparency regarding paid lectures, and restricting the involvement of relatives of justices in STF processes. Curi also suggested reforming the appointment process to include more participation from the judiciary, the Public Ministry, and the legal profession to reduce political influence.

Senator Esperidião Amin, who is seeking reelection, stated that the Senate presidency requires leadership with the courage to process impeachment requests against STF ministers when supported by public demand. Amin noted that while he has signed several such requests, the Senate has historically not moved forward with them. He expressed his intention to run for the Senate presidency in 2027 to address what he described as abuses within the Court.
