Brazilian Senate faces surge in support for STF impeachment
Following recent elections, the Brazilian Senate is projected to have at least 49 members supporting the impeachment of Supreme Federal Court (STF) justices starting in 2027. While 54 votes are required to approve the removal of a magistrate, the growing bloc represents a significant shift in the legislative landscape.
Among the newly elected senators are figures such as Michelle Bolsonaro, Bia Kicis, Guilherme Derrite, and Carlos Portinho. The Liberal Party (PL) is expected to hold the largest caucus in the Senate with approximately 28 members.
Sanderson, the most voted senator-elect from Rio Grande do Sul, has explicitly called for the resignation of justices Alexandre de Moraes and Dias Toffoli, alleging involvement in corruption. He stated his intention to request impeachment proceedings against these ministers, as well as Gilmar Mendes, upon taking office in February 2027, characterizing the move as a mandate from the voters to restore balance between the branches of government.
