Senate opposition proposes deadlines for impeachment requests

Opposition leader in the Brazilian Senate, Rogério Marinho, has introduced a resolution project aimed at establishing strict deadlines for impeachment requests against authorities, including Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers.

Under the current rules, the Senate President holds exclusive power to decide whether to schedule impeachment proceedings. The new proposal would mandate a 30-business-day period for the President to act. If no decision is made within this timeframe, the request could automatically advance if supported by 49 senators.

The move follows growing pressure on Senate President Davi Alcolumbre, who has been accused of stalling 109 pending impeachment requests, 55 of which target Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Alcolumbre has reportedly cited the upcoming election year as a reason for not scheduling these proceedings. The proposal also includes mechanisms for appealing the rejection of a complaint to the Senate plenary.
