Brazilian senators supporting STF impeachment include 25 targets of Court investigations
A group of 49 senators, including those elected for the 2026 term, have publicly expressed support for the impeachment of ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Of these 49 lawmakers, 25 have been the subject of investigations, criminal actions, or investigative measures authorized by the STF itself. This includes cases that were archived, resulted in acquittals, or were transferred to other jurisdictions.
Among the 31 senators elected in 2026 who support the removal of at least one minister, 18 have histories of STF-authorized investigations. Notable figures include Senator-elect Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), who was targeted in operations regarding suspected anti-democratic acts and parliamentary quota misuse, and Senator-elect Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO), who was indicted by the Federal Police for embezzlement and criminal association following an investigation authorized by Alexandre de Moraes.
The pro-impeachment bloc is currently five votes away from the 54 votes required to remove a member of the Court. The participating lawmakers argue that the Senate must exercise its constitutional prerogative to ensure the balance of powers and hold ministers accountable for potential crimes of responsibility.
