Brazilian Settlements and Towns Investigated Over Water Supply Problems
The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) opened a civil inquiry into the water supply for the Ramal do Centrinho community in the Miritizal settlement project near Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre. Prosecutor Lucas Costa Almeida Dias said the investigation will examine whether irregularities in the provision of treated water are harming residents who depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
In Miracema, Rio de Janeiro, local health officials reported the presence of total coliforms in water samples from three neighborhoods, indicating possible fecal contamination. The water concessionaire Águas do Rio disputed the findings but pledged additional testing. Residents expressed concern, with one mother saying, "Tive que levar meu filho ao médico nos últimos meses, e agora me pergunto se a água não pode ter alguma relação com isso." The authorities plan continued monitoring until the supply meets health standards.
