Brazilian Society of Pediatrics warns of sleep deprivation risks in children
The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) has issued an alert regarding the impact of sleep deprivation on children. Unlike adults, who typically show lethargy when exhausted, children may exhibit hyperactivity, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and decreased school performance as signs of fatigue.
To ensure restorative sleep, the SBP recommends that children aged 6 to 12 receive between 9 and 12 hours of sleep per night, while adolescents aged 13 to 18 require 8 to 10 hours. Experts suggest that modern habits, such as the use of electronic screens like cell phones and tablets near bedtime, interfere with the brain's ability to relax. It is recommended to turn off these devices at least one hour before sleep to establish a healthy routine.
