Global pediatric sleep deprivation concerns
Overview
Medical experts and health organizations are raising alarms regarding sleep deprivation in children and adolescents.
In Hungary, data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study, conducted with the World Health Organization, indicates that students are not meeting recommended sleep durations. As students age, sleep duration decreases, with eleventh graders averaging only 7.09 hours. This has resulted in 57.3 percent of students reporting “intense fatigue several times a week,” which may impair concentration and academic performance.
In Brazil, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics has issued alerts noting that fatigue in children often manifests as hyperactivity, irritability, and decreased school performance rather than lethargy. To combat these issues, experts recommend specific sleep windows—9 to 12 hours for children aged 6 to 12, and 8 to 10 hours for adolescents—while advising that electronic devices be turned off at least one hour before bedtime to prevent interference with relaxation.
